I am among the millions who are ecstatic that Stacey Abrams won the Democratic nomination for governor in Georgia.  She didn’t just win, she rocked, clobbering her opponent, Stacey Evans, by over 50 percentage points – Abrams had 76 percent of the 533,450 votes cast in the Democratic primary.   Of course, Abrams very graciously congratulated Evans on her effort during her victory speech last Tuesday night.  Still, it is clear that the work Abrams put into bringing new votes to the polls paid off.  Now, Abrams and her supporters will have to roll up their sleeves and bring even more...

Thanks to President Barack Obama, the solar and wind industries are expanding rapidly.  He provided tax credits and subsidies for renewable energy (part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009).   Despite the stunning failure of the solar company Solyndra, which left taxpayers liable for its $535 million collapse, our nation’s capacity for solar and wind boomed under President Obama, with the cost of rooftop solar dropping by 54 percent during that administration, and with the number of US households with solar panels exceeding a million households by 2016.  Just this month, Cali...

The Black Panther, Chadwick Bozeman, graduated from Howard University with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts (BFA) in 2000.  His writing partner is also a HU graduate.  Bozeman came back to his alma mater to address the Class of 2018, and to reportedly receive an honorary degree.  The Howard University graduation is one of more than 100 HBCU graduations, and more than 4000 graduations around the country.  April Ryan brought down the house at Bennett College on May 5. Sophia Nelson spoke at the Philander Smith (Arkansas) graduation.  All over the country, families are gathering, peop...

While Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) provide a safety net, access to dental care is a big issue, especially for children of color.  According to the Pew Charitable Trusts, “tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among US children, five times as prevalent as asthma, and dental care is one of the nation’s greatest unmet children’s health needs.” Why?  Sometimes children’s parents simply did not arrange for them to see a dentist.  Sometimes, dental services were not available in particular areas, for example, dental needs are sometimes more likely to be addres...

I used to love me some Bill Cosby.  Not only because he was America’s Big Daddy, but also because he was fun and funny.  Most of the times that I was around him, I felt lifted.  He had that deep, heh heh heh laugh, and that sweet smile, and then he loved some HBCUs, so what could you say?

Yeah, there was that irascible thing; that pull up your pants and don’t steal the cake preachy conversation. But there was the $20 million that he and Camille gave to Spelman College and the fraction of which I was able to wangle from him for Bennett College.  We had this conve...
